Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom features an awesome tribute to Nintendo's ancient past

Compared to most companies, Nintendo has history. A lot of it. Having existed for 133 years, there’s quite a lot of the past that can inspire the present – and it’s always exciting when that happens.

I’m not talking about remakes and remasters here. I’m just talking about those silly little winks and nods that add a little extra texture to the culture of a medium. Things like when you hear the Wilhelm Scream or Tarzan Yell in TV or film; a nudge in your ribs with a knowing grin. For a long time, gaming generally felt too young to embrace this sort of thing, but now we have enough history behind us that it’s becoming delightfully more common.

Like I said, Nintendo has the ability to do more of this than most. Not only is it one of the most storied video game companies, but it occasionally also looks back beyond that, to before before Hiroshi Yamauchi decided to take a punt on digital games.
